The wine of the week is St. Francis Winery and Vineyard's 2015 “Old Vines” Zinfandel from Sonoma County. St. Francis Winery and Vineyard is located in Sonoma County, which actually encompasses 18 diverse AVA's, all with unique and different growing conditions, temperatures, and soils. This allows Sonoma County to produce a wide array of wine varietals of great quality and consistency. This wine is a very approachable old vine Zinfandel, with an inky purple color. The nose displays ripe black fruit, tobacco and a hint of wet rock and earth. On the palate you will enjoy medium tannins and acidity, providing a well balanced and long finish that features ripe blackberries, currants, pipe tobacco, and a touch of smoke. The real surprise here is that this bottle retails at the winery for $22, but this was a lucky find at our local Costco, for the surprisingly low price of $14.49. Enjoyed on its own or paired with food, you are sure to enjoy this very affordable, easy drinking Zinfandel.
