There is a small, two lane road that everyone must experience in Sonoma county. It is the meandering path down Chalk Hill Road that will take you to some of the most heralded wineries in Sonoma. Edging along the northeast corner of the Russian River Valley AVA, the drive down Chalk Hill Road takes you through the sub-appellation known as the Chalk Hill AVA, on a beautiful winding oak tree lined journey. World renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Petite Sirah, the Chalk Hill AVA is home to world class vineyards and wineries. The AVA includes more than a dozen wineries and is coveted for its volcanic soil of chalky white ash, quartzite, sand and silty loam. Bordering the Mayacamas Mountains, many vineyards are planted on their slopes and take advantage of the warmth and sunlight. Take some time to visit wineries such as Lancaster Vineyards, Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards, and Rodney Strong Vineyards which are known for consistently producing great wines with wonderful characteristics unique to this AVA.
